Call for Contributors

I'm interested in anyone who may be available to join or contribute to a symposium or paper session focusing on "Surfing and Psychology" for the APA Annual Convention in Honolulu, Hawai'i, July 31 - Aug. 4, 2013. This could include a variety of perspectives and approaches addressing recreation or sports in ocean environments, including the psychology of restorative environments, stress reduction, peak or flow experiences, sports or performance psychology, identity and development, cultural and diversity perspectives, and linkages with conservation behaviors. The session would be directed toward APA Division 34 and would seek co-sponsorship from other divisions (e.g., Sports Psychology, International Psychology, etc.).

For a flavor of some recent health research on surfing, see this recent New York Times article.

I am open to using remote presentation technology for those who cannot be physically present. I am also looking for a student who can help to compile a literature review and contribute to the session.

Please contact Thomas Doherty, PsyD, with interest or questions. The due date for proposals is Nov. 16, 2012.
