Message from the President
Farewell Message President Aida Hurtado (2012-2014)
It all started with a phone call a little over two years ago. Professor Carrie Castaneda-Sound called to ask whether I would consider running for president of the APA’s Div. 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) Section 3 (Latina Issues). I was very honored but a bit hesitant. Professor Castaneda-Sound convinced me with her enthusiasm for the work of the Section and promised her unrelenting support as a past president of Section 3. I have to say that serving as president has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences I have had as an academic social psychologist. I met and had the pleasure of working with an excellent team of dedicated Latinas whose intelligence and commitment to Latina feminist issues is impressive. Our collaborations were beyond enjoyable and productive. We have now selected an excellent set of new officers: our two student representatives Danielle Qunitero and Yoseline Lopez-Marroquin and a new Section 3 president Professor Yvette Flores. It is with great joy and sadness that I pass on the piñata stick to President Flores and the Section 3 representatives. We have accomplished a great deal and I am certain that the organization will grow into its next stage under the able leadership of President Flores and members of the executive committee. I will remain as an active member and as Past President. Muchisimas gracias for allowing me the honor of working on behalf of Latina issues.
