Committee on Psychoanalysis and Health Care report: May 2011

Judith Alpert and Maureen Murphy, Co-Chairs

The Committee on Psychoanalysis and Heath Care was organized in 2002 with the support of Past President, Maureen Murphy, with the goal of increasing the awareness of the contribution of psychoanalytic theory and research in the health care arena to mental health clinicians, medical practitioners and the public.

We have offered Spring Meeting panels on a variety of mind-body topics including:

  • Pain Management

  • Reproductive technology

  • The experience of caregivers of the chronically ill

  • Career trajectories in health care settings

  • Collaborating with physicians

  • Countertransference with physically ill patients

In New York, we initiated a live supervision for graduate students that turned out to be a standing room only event. Chaired by Marilyn Jacobs, Aaron Malark presented clinical material that was supervised by Tamara McClintock Greenberg and discussed by Bernadette Di Toro Goldstein. A live supervision event for graduate students will become an ongoing offering of the committee.

For Santa Fe, in keeping with the theme of creativity, we're planning an interactive program on the topic of the aging patient/aging therapist.

The committee is in the process of developing ways to be in closer communication with the Division membership and invite you to contact us with suggestions for future programs. You can contact one of the co-chairs by simply clicking on the names below.
