Austin Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (ASPP) Chapter Report
ASPP was founded in 1988 as a local chapter of Division 39. It began as a study group of approximately 12 members who yearned to learn more about psychoanalysis and develop a psychoanalytic community in central Texas. Austin is unique in that it is dominated by the state capital, the University of Texas, and computer and music industries. On the other hand, Austin has no medical school or psychoanalytic institute. Local clinicians who seek formal psychoanalytic training commute to the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston, which is affiliated with the American Psychoanalytic Association, or to distance-learning programs at independent institutes in New York or the Washington, DC areas. For those who do not want a formal training program, do not want to travel to get it, or simply want to continue learning and networking with like-minded professionals, ASPP fills a major gap by providing quality educational opportunities.
