Student Membership: Information and Benefits

Div. 47 welcomes students that are interested in the crossover between psychology and athletic performance, thinking of graduate school and need information about specific exercise or sport psychology programs, and want to meet established sport psychologists. Div. 47 is an ideal venue for establishing professional contacts.

What is Exercise and Sport Psychology?

Exercise and Sport psychology is the scientific study of the psychological factors that are associated with participation and performance in sport, exercise and other types of physical activity.

Exercise and Sport psychologists are interested in two main areas: (a) helping athletes use psychological principles to achieve optimal mental health and to improve performance (performance enhancement) and (b) understanding how participation in sport, exercise and physical activity affects an individual's psychological development, health and well-being throughout the life span.

Who are Exercise and Sport Psychologists?

  • Psychologists who have experience in applying psychological principles in sport settings. This involves experience working with athletes, coaches, or sports teams as clients. This suggests competency in understanding the needs of athletes and coaches as well as the unique culture of sport and exercise.

  • Psychologists who have expert knowledge in the research underlying the psychology of exercise and sport, and familiarity with the field of exercise science.

Issues in the Field

  • The relevant literature in the field of exercise and sport psychology is extensive. Examples of research include the development of sport participation, motivation, the psychology of coaching and skilled athletic performance, and the incidence and prevalence of mental health concerns in the athletic population.

  • It is important to be aware that the term "sport psychologist" means that the practitioner has specialized experience and knowledge. It is unethical and illegal to call yourself a "sport psychologist" without adequate training and experience. The term also has legal restrictions to its use.
