Update on the Institute of Medicine Forum for Promoting Children's Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health.

By Mary Ann McCabe, PhD, ABPP

The Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice (SCFPP) is among the sponsors of an Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Promoting Children's Cognitive, Affective and Behavioral Health (C-CAB). This is a three-year project that includes public workshops and commissioned papers , with the goal of enhancing the implementation of evidence-based practices with children across settings. I represent Divs. 37 and 54 (as joint sponsors) on this forum.

The latest workshop was held April 1-2, 2015, and focused on sustaining funding for programs and services entitled, “ Opportunities to Promote Children's Behavioral Health: Health Care Reform and Beyond .” I chaired the planning committee for this workshop, which convened panels of experts, including funders, policymakers and scholars/practitioners to address cutting-edge questions. View the meeting agenda, videos and slides of the presentations. A report is expected to be released in the fall. In addition, I prepared an IOM discussion paper on this subject that was timed for release during Children's Mental Health Week.

The next workshop will be held in December 2015 in collaboration with the Lucille Packard Foundation and will be entitled, “ Systemic Improvements in the Care of Children with Complex Health Care Needs .” It will address health care policy, financing and services for special populations of children. SCFPP member Don Wertlieb is co-chairing the planning committee for this workshop, and I am among the other members.

Updates on forum activities will be provided in each newsletter. However, if at any time members have suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
