Buenos Dias! I am writing from Guadalajara where I am providing sport psychology services to team USA at the Pan American Games. This is the first time Sport Psychology has had such a clear presence at the Pan American Games, evidence that our field is becoming an expected resource for athletes!

But moving along to the Council of Representatives report from the August APA meeting in Washington DC. Special thanks go to Heather Ciesielski from Running Psychologists for representing Division 47 during portions of the meeting! Here are some highlights:

Proficiency Update:

Council voted to renew Division 47’s request for the recognition of Sport Psychology as a Proficiency.

Telepsychology Task Force Update:

  • The Telepsychology Task Force put out call for comments earlier in the year. I contributed comments on behalf of Division 47 given that our members are often working with athletes from a distance and through technological means.

  • From the input of many APA members, fourteen areas of importance were determined and the committee will draft statements of guidelines.

Financial Report (as of August 2011):

  • APA is in excellent financial shape.

  • The budget is balanced.

  • APA’s real estate investments are strong and haven’t been affected by the current economic environment.

  • The investment portfolio had built back to 2007 levels at of 6/30/11, but the effects of the recent economic instability are currently uncertain.

  • This is the third consecutive year for positive operating margin.

APA Strategic Plan Update:

  • Norman Anderson’s team is working on Strategic Initiatives which are the foundation for the Strategic Plan.

  • Seven initiatives have emerged as a cost of $6 million over 3 years ($2.1 million for 2012).

Good Governance Project (GGP):

  • The GGP is underway to evaluate the current governance structures and to determine if it is meeting the needs of our organization. The committee is asking for input from Council and looking at literature to make recommendations for future.

APA continues to promote the entire field of psychology with a variety of projects. Please let me know if you would like me to give any input on behalf of Division 47. Hasta Luego!
