Under the leadership and direction of Past-President John Heil, DA, the society created a comprehensive multimedia programopens in new window to train psychologists, sports medicine professionals, coaches, athletes and other athletic stakeholders in preventing and intervening in situations of sport hazing. The program offers several educational tools to educate the public and support ongoing advocacy efforts related to the prevention of sport hazing:
- Video commentary on hazing by coaches and sport psychologists.
- A formal presentation available for public use for any educational purpose, including community presentations and professional training.
- A series of readings on hazing, advocacy and sensible sport practices, prepared by SportPsych Works.
- A scholarly article authored by Heil, “Sport Advocacy: Challenge, Controversy, Ethics & Action.”
This project was sponsored by the APA Committee on Division/APA Relations’ (CODAPAR) Interdivisional Grant Program, with programmatic support from the APA Div. 16 (Division of School Psychology), APA Div. 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues), the International Swim Coaches Association, Virginia Amateur Sports, and Swim Sport Psychology.
