Div. 47 pre-convention update

The latest news from the president on this year’s initiatives and activities.
By Bradley Hack, PhD

Greetings, fellow Div. 47 members!

It has been a busy spring for the Executive Committee. We are happy to announce that we have completed a number of the projects and initiatives that we began earlier in the year, including becoming a continuing education (CE) sponsor, starting the mentorship program application and matching process, and developing a very interesting Convention program. We also have a new slate of incoming executive committee members to welcome to the fold.

First off, we have our application to become an APA-approved sponsor of CE was approved by APA. This will allow SSEPP to offer CE credit for our very popular webinar series. We will also look to broaden the scope of CE offerings in the future to include other formats. (As an aside, our webinar series is far and away the most popular of all the divisions within APA. So, kudos to our student reps who have done a masterful job running this series over the last few years!) As I mentioned in my last newsletter, Jessica Bartley, PhD, has been appointed to be the society’s new CE coordinator. As such, she will be responsible for the administration of the program. Please keep an eye out for announcements on the listserv from her regarding upcoming CE offerings and how to receive credit. We are hoping to launch this program after APA convention in the fall.

Secondly, we have completed the application materials for our mentorship program and have received approval from APA to begin the program. This initiative will be focused on matching early career professionals (ECP) with established professionals in the field to provide them with guidance and support as they leave the nest of graduate school and embark on their careers. You should have received a listserv announcement from me about the program within the last few weeks. We hope that you will consider participating in the program as either a mentor or mentee.

Third, as you have seen on the listserv updates, program chairs Jessica Bartley, PhD, and Dolores Christensen, PsyD, have developed a wonderful program for APA convention in Chicago. It “sports” a great mix of skill building sessions, in-depth symposia on hot topics and the latest research. We would really love to see you at convention, listen to your ideas about the division, and get to know you. So please take a few minutes to introduce yourself to us during the division’s programs.

Finally, we have received the results of the division election from APA and the results are as follows:

  • President-elect: Jamie Shapiro, PhD
  • Secretary-treasurer: Julie Vieselmeyer, PhD
  • Junior Member-at-large: Amanda Visek, PhD
  • Junior Student representative: Chelsi Battle, BS

Please join me in welcoming them to their leadership posts with our society.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks at APA convention.
