As student representatives for Div. 20 (Adult Development and Aging), we have the opportunity to bring together divisions to foster cross-division discussions at the 2019 APA convention in Chicago. In collaboration with Div. 20 mentors and the support of Divs. 20, 38 (Society for Health Psychology), 40 (Society for Clinical Neuropsychology) and American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), we developed a collaborative symposium titled Translational Science and Advocacy in Dementia: Expert Roundtable Discussion.
Through this collaborative symposium, we intend to encourage discussion on the practical application of dementia-related research. Roundtable discussions led by experts in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and vascular dementia will highlight how dementia research can be applied to clinical care and policy making. In addition to roundtable discussions, a panel of advocacy experts will outline current advocacy work and opportunities for students to become involved with advocacy work within dementia-related research. This symposium will act as an introduction to translational science for a new generation of psychologists.
We encourage all APA student members to attend this symposium for productive and informative cross-division conversations. This will be an opportunity to network with fellow students and lead experts in dementia research. The APA convention takes place Aug. 8-11. However, the specific date and time of this symposium will be announced in April.
