Membership Information

Division 47 (Society for Sport, Exercise & Performance Psychology) brings together psychologists, as well as exercise and sport scientists, interested in research, teaching and service. The division welcomes professional, associate and student members of APA who have an interest in sport and exercise. We also welcome members from all other divisions and other areas of psychology.

For professional and associate members, the division offers a chance to network with other professionals with similar interests. As a smaller division, we offer opportunities for leadership and professional growth. For students, Division 47 offers the chance to meet professionals in the field and to build relationships with future professional cohort. Students are can be involved in all of the division committees and they can serve on the Executive Board. The division also sponsors an annual Dissertation Award as well as an annual Thesis Award.

Benefits of Membership

The benefits of membership in Division 47 are tangible as well as intangible. One of the primary tangible benefits includes a subscription to the Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology journal. The intangible benefits involve a sense of identity and community with colleagues who share a commitment to exercise and sport psychology. This sense of community is fostered by the division’s email list and online community, sponsorship of programs at the APA Annual Convention and involvement with various division committee service and awards. Additionally, the Division offers two special section which provide opportunities for member involvement. For those interested in running, the APA Running Psychologists is Section I of Division 47 and sponsors the annual Ray’s Race at the APA convention. Section II: Performance Psychology brings together members who are interested in research, teaching, and professional practice related to psychological aspects of optimal performance in a variety of performance domains.

Membership Options

Division 47 Membership requires an active APA membership number. Individuals who are not members of the APA may join as professional affiliates or international affiliates. Student Affiliate Membership

Graduate or undergraduate students may become student affiliates of Division 47 whether they are APA student affiliates or not. Student affiliates of Division 47 are eligible to serve on division committees. To be nominated as a Division 47 student representative, you must be both an APA student affiliate and a Division 47 student affiliate. Student affiliate dues are currently $20.65.

Professional Affiliate Membership

Individuals who are not members of the APA may join as professional affiliates. Professional affiliates are non-voting members of the division. Professional affiliates may serve on Division 47 committees, but must be APA members in order to be nominated for an executive committee position. Professional affiliate dues are currently $41.20.

International Affiliate Membership

First, we extend a warm welcome to our international colleagues and we look forward to collaborating with you to advance the work of exercise and sport psychology around the world. Individuals who are not members of the APA may join as international affiliates. To join our division, please use the online membership form to complete your application. International affiliates may serve on Division 47 committees, but must be APA members in order to be nominated for an executive committee position. International affiliate dues are currently $40.65.
