In light of current efforts to eradicate systemic racism and strive for social justice, in a unanimous Executive Committee decision, we have changed the name of the G. Stanley Hall award to the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Developmental Psychology.

Corporal punishment does not belong in public schools (PDF, 519KB)
From APA Services: Nineteen states continue to allow school corporal punishment as a form of discipline. This is despite clear and compelling evidence that corporal punishment causes both physical and psychological injury, is ineffective in promoting positive student behavior, interferes with student learning, is used disproportionally with some groups of students more than others, and creates a negative school climate. Students must be safe and free from physical and emotional harm in schools. A supportive school environment is critical for effective teaching and learning.

Div. 7 member featured for discussion of alcohol use and the pandemic
Research conducted by Div. 7 member, Susan Sonnenschein, PhD, was featured in the both the Conversation and CBS Baltimore. Sonneschein described the relationship between pandemic stress, parents teaching children in remote school, and alcohol use.
APA's recommendations for starting school during COVID-19
The contributors of this document reviewed statements from government, university, and non-profit organizations to identify missing pieces that needed to be addressed on how children can return safely to school during the coronavirus pandemic.
