As a member, how can I join the Division 20 email list?

Email listserv policies

The Division 20 email list has global distribution, is publicly archived, and is indexed in every major international search service. Please do not post confidential or secure information such as telephone numbers, email addresses, or home addresses, or other information you do not wish the whole world to be able to access indefinitely.

Confidentiality Warning

The presence of a confidentiality notice barring further distribution in the body of the email/posting does not override this warning. Responsibility for public dissemination of privileged or confidential information lies solely with the message originator. If sensitive information does get on the email list and its archives, Division 20 staff will try to remove information from the archives, and can share links to search engine "web removal tools" to try to get materials removed from cached pages.

Posting to the Email Listserv & Acceptable Content

The Division 20 Email Listserv is designed as a more dynamic online “newsletter,” and is not designed to be used as an online discussion board or group. To post a message to the list, send an email to DIV20ann@lists.apa.org. Postings for the Division 20 listserv can come in a variety of acceptable forms, including job openings, conference or training announcements, education program information or announcements, funding/award opportunities or updates, and information of professional interest that is relevant to Division 20’s focus on adult development and aging. Please use one of the following pre-defined headers in your subject line, followed by a specific title (e.g., JOBS: University of Erewhon).

Pre-defined headers:

  • JOBS
  • STUDENTS
  • AWARDS
  • CONFERENCES
  • FUNDING
  • INFO

Upon submitting a message to the list, the content of the message will be reviewed by Division 20’s listserv committee members and posted, assuming it is content that is accepted on the listserv. In general, the following are postings that are generally not accepted on the listserv:

  • Requests for information (e.g., finding a difficult reference, finding an out-of-print book or measure, etc.) will not be posted.
  • Messages or postings from for-profit entities will generally not be posted.
  • In line with APA policy, no requests for research participation will be posted, forwarded, or endorsed by Division 20. Requests for research participation will not be accepted onto the Division 20 email list.
  • Messages or postings that contain language that is perceived as being aggressive, sarcastic, or demeaning will not be posted. This includes instances of name-calling and other ad hominem comments, overgeneralization, and offering dispositional character criticisms and attributions, and/or the use of profanity.
  • Messages that fail to observe all copyright laws will not be posted (e.g., do not copy/attach any full-length article or substantive portion thereof, without obtaining and including the copyright holder’s permission to do so).
  • Messages constituted as an “unauthorized back-channel communication,” where an individual’s postings or emails to you or others are forwarded without their permission, will not be posted.
  • Messages or posts that involve endorsement of political candidates outside of APA will not be posted.
  • Excessively lengthy message requests may not be accepted outright for posting. You may be recommended to direct interested parties to contact you off-list or provide a link to a more comprehensive resource.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who moderates the email list?

The email listserv is moderated by the listserv manager co-chairs on the Division 20 Executive Committee. Our current listserv managers can be found on our executive committee list.

Why is the email list moderated?

A moderator ensures that a human being reviews listserv posts to ensure posts are appropriate for the listserv (see types of posts that will not be accepted above) and to eliminate as many SPAM messages as possible.

I want to post a question/request for help (e.g., searching for a reference, test, or a consultant). May I do this?

As a matter of general principle, no requests for information (e.g., finding a difficult reference, finding an out-of-print book or measure, etc.) will be posted. The email list is construed more as a dynamic online "newsletter" than as a discussion group. Email list members have asked us to minimize general requests for information as a way of mitigating list traffic.

How may book publishers/editors/authors inform the division about their books?

While the division recognizes the importance of sharing timely information about new publications by and for members, postings from for-profit entities, which include book publishers, are generally not accepted.

Why can’t requests for research participation be posted on the Division 20 Email Listserv?

APA does not endorse or forward requests for research participation to any APA email list. APA’s policy is available online. While divisions may choose to post requests for research participants to their email lists, Division 20 has opted not to. Please note the following APA disclaimer statements regarding the limits of division and all other email lists as sources for research participants and samples.

  • Email lists (division and other APA discussion lists) make no claim to be exhaustive collections of members who may fit into one or more specific categories (e.g., clinical psychologists, practitioners, educators, and so on). In fact, some 45% of APA members do NOT belong to any one division. By using a division as the "universe" for one's respondents, researchers are excluding a large number of eligible participants and hence may be introducing bias into their research.
  • Many members belong to more than one division, and if the research is being sent to more than one division, the researcher faces the challenge of defining response rate given duplication and of removing duplicate records.
  • APA members and others who are not APA members belong to divisions and topical email lists for several reasons, some of which may not reflect the fact that the member works in the area covered by the division or list in any more than a tangential sense, raising questions about the suitability of the sample to the research.

An exception may be made when a specific request is made to division investigators for the purpose of gathering unpublished studies for inclusion in meta-analyses.

May I endorse candidates for offices within APA on the email listserv?

Endorsement of APA candidates is disseminated as follows: (A) The Executive Committee requests information from candidates using a standardized questionnaire; (B) All responses received are posted on the Division 20 website, announced via the email list and published in the divisional newsletter. The Executive Committee may choose to endorse or rank candidates. Executive committee endorsements will be disseminated via the email list. At the discretion of the Executive Committee, in a given APA election cycle, single "private member" endorsements of APA candidates are also permitted. When permitted, the "comment window" is publicly announced, and will typically have a brief, fixed duration (typically two weeks).

May I endorse political candidates outside of APA?

Endorsement of political candidates outside of APA via the email list is not permitted.

Can non-members of Division 20 join the email list?

No. Non-members may not join the list; membership is open only to regular members, fellows, retired members, student and international affiliates and other recognized APA membership categories. At the discretion of the email list moderator non-members may post to the list but there is no presumed right or guarantee that a posting will be made – this is at the sole discretion of the moderator. Announcements of available jobs, conferences, etc, are most likely to be approved by the moderator. Membership in Division 20 is very affordable and we encourage individuals with an interest in the email list to join the division.
