Using critical discourse analysis, we interrogated the psychological health disparities literature to reveal the reproduction of racism and whiteness via the creation of race as a decontextualized individual-level variable. Psychologists' interruption of these conventional practices will support the aims expressed in the APA's recent Apology to People of Color (2021). The symposium will begin with an introduction by the chair. Nyrah Madon will present an overview of foundational considerations, including the APA’s recent Apology to People of Color (2021). Cindy Asencio-Arroyo and Marco Trevino will present critical discourse analysis as a method grounded in Foucauldian and critical psychological theory. Oliver Xu and Michael Sheffey will present the results and implications of the CDA described above. Tyner Gordon will present suggestions for future directions that emerge from the findings.
