Founded in 2022, the Psychological Humanities at Northeastern University (PH@NU) workgroup is a student-run organization dedicated to sending students to conferences, preparing them for careers and graduate studies, supporting their creation of conference posters and papers, offering them opportunities to support and create scholarly publications, as well as engage with world-leaders in the psychological humanities. Professor Aaron B. Daniels is the founding faculty advisor with Professor Jenelle Kariotis joining us in 2025 as co-advisor.
In our four years of operation, we have sent a total of 65 posters and four papers to 14 conferences:
- Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, 2026
- International Society for Theoretical Psychology, 2026
- Division 24, Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023
- Division 32, Society for Humanistic Psychology, 2026, 2025
- Division 10, Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, & the Arts, 2026, 2025
- Division 8, Society for Social and Personality Psychology, 2026
- Psychology & the Other, 2025, 2024, 2023
We are particularly proud of having created and run Psychology & the Other’s first international conference at Northeastern’s London Campus in July of 2024.
Through finding speakers, making scholar connections, soliciting manuscripts, editing, volume coordination, and promotion, PH@NU students have contributed to three collected volumes, including our forthcoming spiritual direction book for which a PH@NU alumna is a co-editor and another alumna has an extensive chapter:
Daniels, A. B., Capretto, P., & Vogel, G. (eds.) (in page-proofs). Spiritual Direction & the Other: Interdisciplinary Explorations of Accompaniment. Psychology & the Other Series. Routledge.
Daniels, A. B. (ed.) (2025). A Phenomenology of the Alien: Encounters with the Weird and Inscrutable Other. Psychology & the Other Series. Routledge.
Daniels, A. B. (ed.) (2021). Dante & the Other: A phenomenology of Love. Psychology & the Other Series, Routledge.
We are also very proud that a recent PH@NU graduate has had a manuscript accepted for The Journal of Humanistic Psychology.

The Psychological Humanities Open Source (PHOS) Journal: PH@NU is engaged in a long-term effort to build an entirely digital, open-source journal. PHOS responds to a persistent divide between psychology and the humanities—fields that share the human condition as their subject yet too rarely speak to one another within the academy. Rather than treating the empirical and the interpretive as opposites to be balanced, PHOS is transdisciplinary by design, letting the object of inquiry determine which disciplines are brought to bear and drawing literature, art, history, philosophy, and theology into psychological questions with both clinical and theoretical aims.
We are currently building our open-source publishing infrastructure and seeking funding to remain student-run. With ten articles now in our pipeline, we welcome conversations about collaboration, merger, and joining our editorial board.
