About

Addressing rural issues, overcoming barriers, and building connections across state lines.

horses grazing in a field To better serve the unique needs of state, provincial, and territorial psychological associations in rural regions, Division 31 has created a rural health section. Similar to all SPTAs, rural SPTAs support their membership and the issues they face as they strive to meet the needs of their communities.

Rural psychologists and SPTAs need culturally relevant support and collaboration to overcome unique barriers to care, address the hardships facing underserved communities, and support professionals and patients managing complex life challenges that can be commonplace in rural and underserved areas.

“Rural health faces challenges, barriers, and inequities. There is a shortage of mental health providers in rural communities, telehealth remains limited due to the lack of high-speed internet in many parts of the country, and rural cultural competence is often overlooked. Division 31, along with our SPTA partners, are best positioned to address these difficulties and bring psychological expertise to this underserved population. All are welcome to join Division 31’s new Rural Health Section as we develop a community of experts with the passion in addressing rural community needs."

- Paul Korte, PhD, President of Division 31

Division 31 Rural Health Summit

The Division 31 Rural Health Section offered its first rural health summit on October 30, 2023, called "Meeting the Moment: A Conversation on Rural Mental Health Challenges". The summit covered key topics relevant to rural health issues and rural mental health challenges.

We look forward to offering more rural health webinars in 2024 that will take a deeper dive into topics introduced in this first event, as well as other special topics of interest.
