This is a strange and stressful time for many of us, as we are being encouraged to self-isolate. Some individuals may feel they have too much time on their hands, while others are rapidly trying to figure out how to work from home. No matter your situation, self-care is extremely important. Take some time to reassess what works for you now that your routine has changed.
Take a break from the news. While it is important to be informed, it can be beneficial to consume the news in moderation. It may be helpful to limit the amount of time each day you are listening or reading about the coronavirus.
Checking in with family and friends. You are not the only one who is feeling isolated or overwhelmed with the sudden change. This is a great time to reconnect by phone or video chat and see how everyone is doing. Another way to connect is through Google Chrome’s Netflix Watch Party, where you can watch movies with friends or family within your own home. Lastly, it may even be time to catch up on taking, organizing or sending photos of pets and kids.
Practicing self-care. Many meditation applications are now offering free or discounted prices, so take advantage and incorporate meditations into your new daily routine. Try picking up that book you bought long ago or learn a hobby you have always wanted to try. There are online workout classes or go outside for a walk (while adhering to social distancing). Whatever you choose, remember to give yourself grace as you develop your new rhythm and routine.
Balancing children and work. Many of us have to balance teaching children with working from home. During this difficult transition, there are online resources such as virtual tours of Monterey Bay Aquarium or the San Diego Zoo. Be proactive and connect with friends to develop a support group through Facebook, text messages or email. You can share resources and support one another with recipes or work/life balance. Be kind to yourself. It takes time to figure out and adjust to this new routine.
