Since our last update in December, the committee has mostly focused on two activities: developing programming on bisexuality for the 2019 APA convention and selecting recipients for our two awards. The committee is very excited about the programming planned for convention. We have three events planned:
- Our annual symposium is titled “Positive Experiences of Bisexuals in Mixed-Orientation Relationships” and will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. in McCormick Place Room W180.
- We have also once again collaborated with Div. 35 on a roundtable session on “Affirmations and Intersections: Bisexuality, Gender, Relationships and Representation.” This will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 8 a.m. in McCormick Place Room S105bc.
- Our annual conversation hour on bisexuality will be held in the hospitality suite on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 12 p.m.
Each year at convention, the committee presents two awards to support students who research bisexuality. These awards are the Bisexual Foundation Award, which provides $1,000 to graduate students who advance research on bisexuality, and the Bisexual Issues Committee Student Travel Award, which is award to students to help defray the costs of attending convention. Winners of this year’s awards will be announced closer to convention.
We also have a few changes in the leadership of the committee as of the 2019 convention. Christopher Davids and Laurel Watson rotate off as co-chairs, and Andy Choi will leave his role as convention programming coordinator. Our communications coordinator, Amanda Pollitt, will enter the role of co-chair, and our student representative, Melissa Manley, will take over her role. We are currently soliciting applications for our other co-chair position, as well as programming coordinator and student representative. Though we will miss Chris, Laurel and Andy, we look forward to working with our new colleagues on increasing the visibility of bisexuality in psychology.
