Advocacy

The Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (SPSOGD) exists to advance the science and practice of LGBTQIA+ affirming psychology. Our science tells us that the impact of sociopolitical-level stressors, such as health care restrictions, negatively impacts the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ communities. Additionally, the APA Multicultural Guidelines direct psychologists to “...advocate for accessibility and pursue treatment with social responsibility, inherent to the elements of social justice within the field of psychology.” (APA, 2017, p. 46). In our work, APA Division 44 strives to emphasize intersectionality in policies and legislation negatively impacting LGBTQIA+ communities, recognizing that intersecting systems of oppression result in disparate inequities in health and wellbeing.

Here you will find a sample of resources for engagement in LGBTQIA+ related advocacy in interpersonal, community, and systemic levels. If you are interested in joining SPSOGD advocacy efforts on behalf of the Division, APA and elected members of Congress, please consider joining the Public Policy Committee (PPC).

This page will be updated with resources as they are vetted and approved by the PPC. If you would like to submit a resource, email us.
