"Things are better for LGBTQ youth and young adults today, right?”
While things have changed, there are persistent challenges:
- Seventy-seven percent of LGBTQ youth report feeling down or depressed, but only 41 percent receive any counseling.
- Eighty percent of LGBTQ youth of color have personally experienced racism.
- Only 27 percent of LGBTQ youth can “definitely” be themselves in school as an LGBTQ person.
- Only 19 states and the District of Columbia have enacted anti-bullying laws to protect LGBTQ students. (HRC 2018 LGBTQ Youth Report).
How will psychologists respond?
Six divisions of APA (Divs. 7, 9, 27, 37, 43, 44) are coming together to create a Statement of Priorities and an Agenda for Psychology of LGBTQ Youth and Emerging Adults.

The workshop has three learning objectives:
- List at least three current challenges facing LGBTQ youth and emerging adults.
- Identify at least three lines of action that psychologists can take to address current challenges facing LGBTQ youth and emerging adults.
- Describe how multiple minority identities intersect to create unique challenges for LGBTQ youth and emerging adults.
Div. 44 is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Div. 44 maintains responsibility for the program
Refund/cancellation policy
Registered participants may request a full refund until seven (7) calendar days before the workshop, when a phone or email request is received by the workshop organizers. If the request for a refund is within seven (7) calendar days before the workshop, a partial refund, 80 percent of the registration fee, will be returned to the registered participant. No refunds can be processed after the event. No-shows are responsible for the full registration fee.
If the event is cancelled, all registered participants will receive a full refund.
Complaint Process
During the conference, a student or community volunteer or CE Committee member will be present to assist with the process and answer questions.
The procedures for addressing complaints are as follows:
When a participant files a complaint, either orally or in written format, and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken and complaints will be shared with the Div. 44 CE coordinator.
- If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker or the style of presentation, the individual making the complaint will be asked to put their comments in written format. Program organizers will then pass the comments on to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the complainant.
- If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, on-site program organizers will mediate and attempt to resolve the complaint on-site. If the participant requests action, the program organizers are empowered to: (a) provide a credit for a subsequent year's workshop or (b) provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.
Actions 2a and 2b will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual. - If the complaint is made after the program has occurred or concerns the CE programming more generally, the complaint will be addressed it as follows: (a) request that the complainant submit a written complaint and propose an appropriate remedy, (b) provide the instructor(s) with the opportunity to respond to the complaint and propose an appropriate remedy and (c) review these documents, make a final determination and decide on any remedy.
For further information, contact Workshop Director Richard A. Sprott via email or by phone at (510) 919-4488.
Grievances regarding this program should be submitted directly to Div. 44 CE Coordinator Jae Puckett, PhD, via email.
