In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Alliant International University are pleased to announce the One Book, One Alliant event in October featured Oliva Espin, PhD, CSPP Professor Emerita as well as the San Diego State University Women’s Studies program. Espin discussed her memoir, My Native Land is Memory: Stories of a Cuban Childhood, about her childhood in Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s. She examined Cuba’s fraught history and political instability, interweaving all with memories of life at that time. The book is a narrative of her struggle for identity and independence against the backdrop of a country in turmoil and the experience of migration, loss, and perseverance. The book and presentation touched on cultural-historical specificity, psychological analysis, and insight into the complexity of relationships that influence the development of the human psyche, providing a perspective on lifelong development.
