The Committee on Consensual Non-monogamy has several exciting updates to share. First, we are pleased to announce that our proposal for an annual Consensual Non-monogamy Research Award was approved by the division’s board at the midwinter meeting, with funding in the amount of $2,000. This award will open for applications for the first time in 2027. In addition, our proposal for funding to host a consensual non-monogamy (CNM) meetup at the 2026 APA Annual Convention was also approved. This event will provide space for consensually non-monogamous community members, as well as researchers and clinicians working with CNM populations, to connect and build community.
We are also excited to share that committee meetings have recommenced, and members are actively engaged in several new initiatives. Current projects include the development of a draft of a potential policy statement to be submitted to the division’s Public Policy Committee that addresses the pervasive stigma and discrimination experienced by CNM communities, associated health disparities, and the role of nondiscrimination laws in mitigating these challenges. Members are also working on a potential fact sheet outlining clinical interventions with CNM clients, which will build upon existing division resources (PDF, 264KB)opens in new window focused on affirming clinical practice with CNM individuals and relationships.
Looking ahead, we anticipate additional innovative proposals from committee members aimed at advancing research, education and training, psychological practice, and public interest advocacy. These efforts are intended to ensure that CNM communities are meaningfully represented within psychological science and professional practice.
If you are interested in getting involved and have not seen our previous calls for new/returning members, please email Vaughan and Boot-Haury to be added to the CNM Committee email list.
