Is your Division 44 membership up to date for 2026? To apply for initial fellow status through Division 44, the member’s status needs to be current, and the August convention is the deadline to activate a 2026 Division 44 membership. Whether you might consider applying for fellow status this coming cycle, please make sure you have paid your 2026 dues before August 2026!
Applications for new fellows are typically due in late fall or early winter. Watch for the date announcement in the fall Division 44 Newsletter. If you are not prepared to submit an application this year, it is always a good time to have a conversation about your interest in applying or to encourage someone else to apply. It is an honor for the fellows committee to celebrate Division 44 members and their significant contributions to sexual orientation and gender diversity in psychology and of 2-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Non-binary, Queer, and other sexual orientation and gender diverse (2SLGBTQ+) communities. Please feel free to contact us with your questions and recommendations.
What is the APA fellows program?
The fellow distinction is a means by which APA recognizes members who have received a doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution and demonstrate evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions to the discipline of psychology. Fellow status requires that an APA member’s work has had a demonstrable impact on the discipline that is national or international in scope. More informationopens in new window.
Division 44 requires members who receive fellow status to have made outstanding contributions in research, practice, education, or policy/advocacy related to the lives and issues of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and communities. It is important to underscore the breadth of contributions that our division will consider as criteria for fellow status. Again, these contributions need to have had national or international impact.
There are two pathways by which Division 44 members can achieve fellow status in Division 44. The initial fellow path is for members who are not Fellows in any other APA division. The current fellow path is for Division 44 members who are Fellows of another APA division and wish to be considered Fellows of Division 44 as well.
If you have any questions about the process, or if you wish to discuss the question of whether to apply for fellow status, please feel free to contact Melissa Gray and Sharon Horne.
Please also consider reaching out to the Division 44 fellow committee members listed below. We are happy to talk with you about useful strategies for the application process. Also, if you know of Division 44 members who are not yet Fellows but should be, please suggest that they consider applying.

The Division 44 fellows committee has grown and been sustained by generations of Division 44 leaders to recognize, celebrate, and share important accomplishments in 2SLGBTQI+ psychology. We express appreciation especially for immediate past chair, Glenda Russell, whose words and voice we continue to draw upon.
