Learning from My Mother’s Voice (Chin, 2017) is an oral history about my mother, which chronicles her journey of immigration and acculturation in the U.S. As with all immigrant families, the journey for a better life, the sacrifices for the success of their children, the challenges of poverty and discrimination to achieve the American dream are all in in that journey. In telling her story, it became a story about transformation and the creation of family legend — a process that all immigrant families can use to bond and to heal from the trauma of immigration. In revisiting ancestry through cultural mythology, family saga in a narrative between mother and daughter and the intergenerational bonds created hope for the future.
