Present in person: Jen Kaminski, Mary Ann McCabe, Mirian Ofenodu, Jill McLeigh, Christina Rodriguez, Paula Fite, Amy Damashek, Christy Olezeski, Sonia Rubens
By Phone: Mindy Willing
The 2018 midwinter meeting minutes were approved.
Reports
Miriam Ofonedu, Program Chair
Offer the program chair the choice for the division to pay for convention attendance or the midwinter meeting. This will be added to the officer’s manual.
Mindy Willing, Membership Chair
Discussion of in-person networking for members. From the mentoring survey, we have lots of people who said they want mentors, but not enough people who have volunteered to be mentors. It’s for members and non-members. We could ask the fellows to ask to be mentors.
Idea of Mapping of Div. 37 members – so people can find other nearby members (see comments under Keith Cooke)
Question of whether or not to restrict the listserv to members. Sonia – we would have to remove a lot of people off of the listserv. Challenge – lots of members are not on the listserv – we added a blurb in the newsletter and on the website. When people join or renew, we can include an invitation to the welcome email. We can’t have people opt out of the listserv.
Some members opt out of APA emails, so we do not get to send them any Div. 37 emails (follow up with Keith Cooke)
Idea to call new members – Mindy has been following up with non-renewals.
Social media absence – we need to link to more social media – which platform should we use? Take responsibility to each post once/week. Sonia was relying on the students to do it, but she hasn’t heard from them. Sonia doesn’t have administrative privilege to Facebook page.
Discussed the idea of appointing a social media board member or a student assistant – it might work if Sonia had oversight of the student board.
Mary Ann McCabe, Representative to APA Council 2017-2019
C-CAB Forum: New theme – engaging businesses in partnership to promote children’s well-being – had a roundtable with 10 business leaders present. Talked about how they view their role in promoting children’s well-being. Most insurance companies don’t get a return on investment because people change companies so they don’t benefit from prevention. There are some businesses that are starting to promote community health because it benefits their employees. Trying to get them to think about children’s health. Working with Mental Health America and Ready Nation that engage with business around the world on children’s well-being. Next workshop will be focused on business as well.
APA Council: new APA expanded advocacy model – will switch from a (c)(3)to a (c)(6)– can lobby to an unlimited degree and can support candidates. This switch will allow much more advocacy and put money into PACs. APAPO (practice organization) is going broke. Mary Ann was on the expanded advocacy work group – drafted a model that was approved by council. All APA membership dues will be split across the (c)(3) and (c)(6). 60 percent in the (c)(6) (lobbying and advocacy) and 40 percent in (c)(3) – lots of other organizations do this. Board of Directors and Finance committee would oversee both budgets.
Discussion about whether military psychologists could provide services to detainees in Guantonamo (painful conversation). APA has been getting bombarded with emails about this issue. There was press and protestors. It was voted down – vote was 33 to 67 percent. Psychiatry and social work is providing services, but they aren’t getting any trauma treatment.
Craig Fischer, Science Directorate, Government Relations
Four lobbyists focused on increasing and protecting funding for psychology research, inform policymakers about psychology research, increase ability of psychologists to advocate, training in advocacy.
APA Advocacy reorganization – consolidation of government offices into one to increase coordination on the Hill. There have been some concerns. Science will continue to be a priority in advocacy efforts – Divisions should weigh in on advocacy issues and for setting priorities. Mary Ann will send a flowchart about how the Divisions and members can influence the Science Directorate – we will get a survey about advocacy priorities.
Bipartisan federal budget – more discretionary funding – good for science. President’s 2019 budget proposal includes less money for science. Congress added more money for science.
Have been active in the clinical trials policies – APA worked closely with other scientific organizations to work with NIH on policy regarding clinical trials.
Jen asked how Div. 37 can be of service – NIH is redoing its strategic plan – need a stronger voice for psychological and behavioral science. Div. 37 can provide input on NICHD strategic priorities – strategic planning website – the working group names are out.
Mary Ann suggested that Div. 37 write a letter. Invite NICHD to speak at the CCAB forum.
There will also be a request for information on draft priorities – we can give feedback then.
Craig will send his advocacy government relations document.
Keith Cooke, APA Division Services – Div. 37 account manager
Question about membership map –APA is not mapping members’ locations. Membership directory is searchable by location. You need member permission to do something like that.
Membership director – can help us figure out how to keep members, and get members back who have dropped.
Lauren Caldwell, Director, Children, Youth & Families Office – Public Interest
“I am psyched” exhibit – focusing on women of color in psychology – to encourage young women of color to go into psychology – can purchase a shirt for $20.
Physical discipline resolution – it will go to the crosscutting agenda in Fall and hopefully on the February agenda for passing– have gotten some comments that have been dealt with. Need to ensure that the council members are prepared to make an educated vote – there is opposition.
Children’s mental health resolution – Mary Ann is chairing it – revising 2003 resolution – put together a working group – it will be fast tracked and will be on fall cross cutting agenda for Fall and to council to vote by February. They don’t anticipate controversy. CYF would like feedback on it within a short time frame – will send it to us
Lauren will send us info about what is happening. Mary Ann – we may need a new CYF liaison – we will reach out to Dara Blachman. Christina will not be on the board after December. Nominations for CYF are open and close at the end of the month.
Mary Ann – the science – human subjects committee – put forth something for mature minors who can get txt for health conditions that they also be allowed to participate in research – if there is minimal risk – it was passed on the consent agenda.
Jill McLeigh, Editor of The Advocate
Do we need to do the special format for the website? Can we just put the link on the website rather than the pdf? It’s okay as long as there’s a way to get access to old issues.
Christy Olezeski, Member-at-Large: Early Career Psychologists 2017-19
ECP Committee wants to do ECP features – so they need to know the dates ahead of time.
Voted to offer a cash prize to this year’s honorable mention awardee for the Mark Chaffin Award. Will consider this option for later years (and impact on budget).
