Membership chair—Liz Gershoff
Liz will send an email to the main division listserv inviting interest in the membership chair position, emphasizing the opportunity for early career members to get involved in division leadership.
Budget—Jenelle Shanley
We are halfway through our fiscal year. We are in the green for the first time in quite some time, mostly because we haven’t traveled for meetings during the pandemic. Most of our remaining expenses are our awards. Two items were raised for discussion:
- adjusting portfolio's risk tolerance
- converting from a nondiscretionary to discretionary account, which would allow Ameriprise to place transactions authorization within the parameters of our risk tolerance and agreed time frame without our verbal confirmation
The Board deferred any decisions on the discussion items until we have additional information.
APA convention—Tom Gross and Doris Pu
The Board had discussed having two program chairs with staggered terms, so the incoming person could learn from the current chair. That change would require modifications to the Officers’ Manual. Discussion ensued on the timeframe for both people, particularly in relation to when the president-elect is selected.
Officers’ Manual—Liz Gershoff
Liz proposed reorganizing the officer's manual by role and by when the activities start, rather than by calendar year. The current manual organization presents challenges for the president-elect, president and past-president positions, especially because some of the president-elect activities must occur prior to the start of their term. It also has implications for the APA program chair positions.
Christina and Liz will discuss the possibility of two-year terms for program chairs and propose revisions for the manual. Liz will propose revisions for the sections for president-elect, president and past-president. These will be taken up at a subsequent meeting.
Funding for presidential initiatives—Christina Rodriguez
Christina asked the Board for funds to support her presidential initiatives. She already has financial pledges from Divs. 12 and 22 and in-kind contributions from other divisions for the CODAPAR grant proposal on postpandemic recovery. The Board agreed that the standing budget line item for presidential initiatives and briefings can be used to support the project.
Communications—Spencer Evans
The website is doing well with a steady increase in visitors, particularly on the Resources page. Website tasks are mainly a routine maintenance issue now.
Member access to the Advances publication via the website remains an outstanding problem. In the meantime, Spencer has a note on the page for folks with access difficulty to contact him for a pdf copy. Spencer will follow up with Springer on the access issue.
The main listserv is doing well but the student listserv isn't really being used. Other listservs not under Spencer’s purview are those for ECP, CM and DREAM SIG. The board decided to fold the student and ECP listservs into the main division listserv.
The Board discussed the perennial question of whether access to the listserv is a membership benefit or should be available to nonmembers as well. Reconciling listserv members with division membership involves membership chair and communications chair. Spencer met with Keith and looked at membership system.
Social Media—Elisa Vele-Tabbador
We are now present on LinkedIn with 289 followers, most of whom were identified via Elisa’s manual outreach. Twitter is still our biggest market, but we are growing quickly on Instagram. We now have two new student coordinators working on social media with Elisa.
Earl reminded the Board that we had voted on members making short videos about their research and why they joined the division. The group agreed that we will each plan to record a short video before the end of the year.
Advances publications—Tom McMahon
In the next couple of weeks, Tom will revise the Statement of Purpose and send it to the board for reactions. He also raised the idea about engaging Springer in discussion about monograph series. It is unclear how many issues per year would be required. The advantages of a monograph series include broader indexing in databases and the ability to obtain journal impact factor. It is unclear what the differences are in the business relationship between the division and Springer. Tom will continue to try and engage Springer representatives in the discussion
Midwinter Board meeting
We plan to meet in-person (with Zoom option) in Atlanta for the board midwinter meeting.
