“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend, John Dagley. There are many happy memories of our association. These began when we were roommates as members of the founders of the board of directors of CACAREP. In those days, CACAREP was small and insignificant and we were just getting it started. We roomed together in order to save money and fix our own meals except for dinner. We had big plans for CACAREP — it was not going to evolve into a large bureaucracy. I interacted with John through Div. 49 and in many other ways later. When we would see each other over the years, we would commensurate that our founding ideas did not last. He was indeed a good friend and an outstanding professional, who was also a giving and caring person. I will sorely miss him.” –Rex Stockton
“I remember when John received the lifetime mentoring award from Div. 17. There were a large number of his students, current and former, and colleagues who were at the business meeting to congratulate him and acknowledge his many contributions. The love, respect and gratitude that they felt for John was so evident. I will miss him, and Div. 49 has lost a great ambassador.” –Dennis Kivlighan
“I had the pleasure of serving on the Div. 49 Board with John some years back, and he was always welcoming, kind and funny. John sent several of his students to our internship at FSU to learn more about group psychology and group psychotherapy. So sorry to hear this news…” –Josh Gross
“John was one of the ‘big’ names when I was just starting in the field and was very kind to me as a young member.” –Gary Burlingame
“Indeed he was. I also met him through Div. 49 and very much liked him and working with him. In sadness.” –Susan Gantt
“I met John while working with the Board. He was a gentleman and a scholar. His wise counsel will be missed.” –Nina Brown
“I was very sorry to hear that John has passed away…he was always such a positive force in any gathering, someone who made APA and Div. 49 get-togethers not just successful but great fun. He held many offices in the division and helped me in hundreds of ways when I served as president back in 2008...keeping an eye on our revenues and processing all that paperwork for APA. I wish I could have thanked him one last time for his help and good humor. A great guy.” –Don Forsyth
“Thanks to Lee Gillis for sending the news, so sad, about John Dagley’s death. It hurts even to write those last three words. John was, indeed, a great guy. Through Div. 49 and other professional associations, I was fortunate to work alongside John over decades, and better yet to become his friend. Knowing these contacts now are over already leaves a hole. I hope to find comfort in warm memories of a competent professional and friend who valued relationships and service and willingly gave his support and kindness. And who was simply fun to be around. My condolences and best wishes go to his family and to all the legion of others who cared so much about John.” –Bob Conyne
“John Dagley was a member and officer of Div. 49, and our membership will be saddened by his passing.” –Andy Horne.
“I met John at my first mid-winter Board Meeting as editor of the newsletter. He made me feel welcomed and his scholarly aura was contagious. He was a gentleman and clear to me his service and willingness to support our division will be missed.” –Tom Treadwell
