Greetings, Div. 37 Early Career Professionals:
As we approach the summer convention, I want to invite everyone to our annual Div. 37 happy hour from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8 at Woven & Bound, inside the Marriott Marquis Hotel. The Div. 37 Early Career Professionals (ECP) Committee will be partnering with the Section on Child Maltreatment to host this event, and we are inviting all members of Div. 37 to join us. We hope that this leads to a nice mix of early-, mid- and mature-level members to share information and embark on potential collaborations together.
We will be offering a free drink to the first 37 attendees, and there will be light appetizers to share. Feel free to stop by before heading over to the joint happy hour hosted by Divs. 37 and 54. Hope to see you there.
As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, we started our first Div. 37 mentor match program in October 2018. This spring, I reached out to our original 24 participants and asked them for some feedback on the program. While we definitely have room to grow to make this project more effective and helpful to our members, the majority of respondents noted that they found this project very easy to participate in and useful to their career. Here are some responses:
- “It was great to be matched with someone who had funding experience and who is in a similar job trajectory as me!”
- “Hearing about that individual’s career development and how they made their way into the policy sector, given their training in clinical psychology. Having a supportive individual in a professional area outside of academia.”
- “Super happy that this opportunity was available…the connection is worth a million!”
- “I'm so grateful I was matched with my mentor. She gave me excellent advice and had a lot of knowledge about my topic of interest-¬perhaps more so than my own faculty!”
- Please watch your email in the early fall for more information on how to join the second iteration of this mentor match project.
Finally, thank you for those of you who applied for the Mark Chaffin Early Career Research Grant and the Div. 37 ECP Service Award. We once again had some great applications. Please be sure to attend our business meeting on Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. to cheer on the award winners. Stay tuned to the next issue of the newsletter as we share a little about the awardees. If you are interested in applying for these awards next year, please remember that the due date is June 1.
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for how to better serve our ECP members, please let me know. Wishing you a wonderful spring and summer ahead.
