Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy achieved specialty status in August 2018 when the APA Council approved the recommendation from the Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology for recognition.
Programs at the doctoral, internship and postdoctoral levels can now offer group psychology and group psychotherapy as formal specialties, and post-licensure psychologists can obtain the specialty designation through the American Board of Group Psychology.
